First of all I like to say hello to everyone!!! This is my first time joining/posting in any forum. I have a question... I have a 84 Cutlass Supreme base model 307 v8 4 barrel carb all stock. My question is "what would make it stall out when I mash on the gas"? Now let me get into the things I did to it so it can be out in the open! I had a 200- 4R rebuilt and replaced in the car and I drove it from Philly where I live to Somers Point Ocean City NJ to go fishing as a test run to be sure everything was 100% The car ran beautiful!!! Got back and drove around the city for two days and the next morning I came out it wouldn't start. I noticed it wasn't getting spark so after replacing countless parts I learned either the timing chain or gear was worn. So I dove in head first and tore everything down and replaced the chain cam and crank gears. But it was the cam gear that was the culprit. After putting everything back together it started on the first try to my surprise!!! Oh yeah I made sure everything was lined up and made sure it was @ TDC and all. Anyway, I tried to set the base timing I believe with a timing light. I think I got that right. Car runs fine on the streets. And it even runs great on the expressway but the issue is I have to let the speed build up. I can't just mash out to get in on a on ramp or even to just ball out on the expressway or it will stall or try to stall. Also. before everything I could do burnouts, mash out and whatever else with no issues. I was told it was a fuel problem so i replaced the mechanical fuel pump. Yes the fuel filter was recently replaced too. Im leaning towards my Carb being bad... I was also told I might have vacum leaks . I do have some hoses not connected "BUT" they are the same hoses that were not connected before hand so I figured whats the difference now??? I could be 100% wrong so please correct me if so!!! Any information would help. Thanks ahead of time guys!!! :wtf:

Sounds like it might need rebuilt or it could just be that the carb might not be set-up right. Check to see if all the hose are on correctly and tight. I had a problem with mine stalling at pushing on the gas but it turned out to be the filter. Best thing would be to find a way online to set the carb (I don't know how to off hand), make sure all the hoses are tight and make sure a random one might not be hooked up. If all else fail, go to CL or the junkyard and find a fairly decent Qjet to try and see if it work and you'll know if the carb was bad.

If it's an internal carb filter (Qjet has them) make sure it isn't put in wrong. I've seen that happen and it deprives the engine of gas.

Thanks a lot! I will go over everything and see what happens as far as the vacum lines and hoses. If that fails on to a new carb. :blam:

Yup, no problem. It could be as simple as a bump on a line that threw it off to a filter problem. Good Luck! 😀

Double check your timing, the tan wire needs disconnected when you set the timing. Set it to 20 at 1100 is the spec. It could be a severely loose secondary air door or leaking choke pull off. A blown pull off will allow secondary door to open too fast. I bet the timing is off.

Funny you should mention a severely loose secondary... :?: Is the secondary door suppose to have any spring to it while the car is off? I know its super loose off and while it's running until the choke is off then it has some tension @ idle. :?

So all the vaccum hoses are good. The timing is on point so Im left to believe that the secondaries or just the carb itself is the issue!

So almost a year later I've been driving the car with this issue ever since the post. Just recently stop running due to no feul to the carb. It will fire right up and run as long as I'm feeding it starting fluid. All parts are under a year old. Mechanical fuel pump, fuel filter and the newest part is the sending unit in the tank. I'm lost... I don't know where to start or what to replace again. HELP!!! :blam:
