I have an 85 442 and am thinking about painting it the 86 burgundy metallic scheme (wasn't offered in 85), would this hurt the value even though it'll still be an official 442 color?

Depends on who's buying it. If it's someone looking for bone stock, original looking car, then...hell yeah it'd make a difference. If it's got a ton of mods on it anyway like LS engine, different suspension, all the stock stuff thrown away, etc., then no, won't make any difference normally. With these things, it seems to be a crap shoot. Some people don't mind, but others lose their minds over stuff like this. Regardless of whatever color you paint it, make sure it's done right and with good quality work and materials. Even if the color isn't original, as long as it looks great, it will be far more palatable.

For 85 you only had black, white, or gray to choose from. 86-86 gave you burgundy, black, blue, and gray.

It's your car. Your money. Paint it whatever color you like best. A color change is a big deal, as you or a subsequent owner wouldn't likely change back from whatever color you change it to, so it will likely be a stigma on the car the rest of its life. If you're doing it with selling it down the road or something, you'll get far more interested parties the more original it is.

Have you considered white? It was only offered an 85 and really looks good on a 442. One of my favorite colors on a G body 442 and there aren’t many around. It may even increase the value of your car. If your car is mint and in all original condition then I’d keep it the original color. Painting it purple, brown, lime green or another crazy color (think red headed step child Mopar guys) will definitely lower the value. Just look at some of the donks with big rims. 🙄

It's purely for me, no plans to sell it. My only planned mods are a 403 then take it to metal and paint it, just trying to decide if I want black or burgundy. Other than that it's original.

Thanks for the input!

I like the burgundy and silver look on those, what is your interior color?

I'll consider white also, hadn't thought about that one.
Here’s some inspiration.
