I'm trying to replace the wiper/cruise switch. I'm told that the switch itself just pulls out. The steering wheel comes off easily enough, but I'm told that I need to at least remove the plastic steering column cover to reconnect the new switch wire.

The shop manual simple says to "pry up" on the three small slots to remove. It feels like we're going to break the plastic as it's not very rigid. Any suggestions?

That switch wire runds down the column and connects to the cruise control. If you are not using cruise then I wouldn't worry about plugging it in again. Sometimes pulling that wire out will get the connector stuck in the column and then it's a b*tch to get out, just cut the wire on the old turn signal stalk and tuck the wires in the column. You can always replug it in later on when you're under the dash.

The stalk just pulls out, a swift yank will get er done...

As for the box like cover just push in lightly on the side of it and the tabs will unhook and it should lift off.
Don't ever force things...
