I found a complete 85 M/C SS dash with the gauge package for $150. I assume the dash pod will fit in the '78 wagon?

If so, it's going in my sons wagon and replacing the 80mph Speedo and the aftermarket Tach.

Bonus? Right in the same town. No travel. Nice.

Since it is the complete dash with stereo speakers, can I just install the whole unit in place of the wagon one?

Good score. You will be able to install the entire unit in the '78 wagon. The only obstacles I can see would be reconfiguring the plug going into the gauge cluster, which is no big deal. You will need a small jewelers type screw driver to loosen the connectors.
Below is a link to the Malibu Racing site. This should help you.

Also, there's no washer/ wiper switch on the Monte Carlo dash. You would either have to convert to the column stalk type, or modify the dash to accommodate the dash mounted switch.
You will also need to visit your local parts store and pick up the proper engine sending units for a Monte Carlo SS. Oil pressure, water temp.
Good luck.

Went to see it tonight. very nice but not an SS. Idiot lights and no tach. Kinda disappointed. We need a Speedo with more than 80mph and if I could score a factory Tach that would be nice.

That's too bad, but probably still a good deal if your dash is all cracked and weather beaten.
Maybe keep looking for an SS gauge pod. Worse case scenario, you could find the tach and gauges individually and convert an idiot light cluster.

As for the speedo. you could have an 85 mph speedo recalibrated and replace the faces on the tach, speedo, and gauges.
