I have a 1986 Cutty Supreme and want to take the nasty roof upholstery off the car and have the roof all smooth metal and then re-painted. Is this even possible? I had a body shop friend of mine say that it would be a difficult job because of all the brackets and attachments that keep that stuff on the car. Does anyone have any experience with this?

im in school right now for auto body. i do my own body work. Its possible.I removed my soft top and you cant even tell it came with one. after its off there will be about 30 very small parts sticking up which held the top to the car. There will be about 10 around each rear window and about8 going across the top of the roof to the other window. All you have to do is cut them off with a grinder. if you dont get it perfectly flat, which you wont. Apply small amounts of body filler (bondo) to the spots you removed the pieces from.sand the spots til the body is straight. after that its up to you to what to do with the paint job. I forgot my car came with a soft top.

yeah the ones over the rear window for sure will leave holes if you twist them. i dont know about twisting the others but i twisted the ones above my rear window now i have holes in their places.i shouldve grinded those off 2.

Don't forget that the rear side windows are different between a hardtop and vinyl top car, so if you want it to look right, you've got to replace those also.
