doing a engine swap on my 87 442.looking for suggestions or tips.building the motor now and wondering if there is anything i should look out for. any help would be appreciated
455 olds and a 700r 4 trany

all i know is that your gonna have to build the HELL out of that 700r4 to hold up to a built 455, but when you do its gonna be a meeeean setup. OH and you need chevy to bop adapter, different bolt patterns, or you could go with a 200r4 since it needs rebuild anyway

Go with a TH350 With a shift Kit instead of the 700r4. what kind of machine are you going for street and strip or a cruiser with reliablity.

good point, as long as this isnt gonna be some highway, over-the-road, transportation, go with a built th350, get a bop one so no adapter, and it will last alot longer behind the 455 torquebeast

was going for a good driver and fun.car has 373 gears and only thought about the 700r for the over drive and strength.didn't even think of the bolt pattern.DAAA!!!!!!!!!!!! sometimes i don't think through things.as far as a adapter plate that's not a problem.i have a relative that dose custom adapters here in Minnesota.
whats your take on the 200r?i didn't think it would hold up. as of right now the motor build will be about 500 hp and the same torque.i am not doing the engine.i have left that up to my uncle as he dose high performance engines for a living..{i am a body man not a mechanic}.i ran a th400 in my chevelle SS big block and didn't like the rpms at 70 mph. i am open on the transmission right now. that's why i was asking your opinions..any in put would be greatly appreciated.

YGspider, If he wants both not one or the other he wants the OD transmission. Three speeds are obsolete except for race cars or no budget compromise builds where you are just looking to get something moving cheap as possible.

They cost about the same to have properly built to withstand an abusive owner with a stout big block. Why get into having your nice 8.5 rear driveshaft cut to fit and buy new U joints? Your original 200-4R has better gear spread & overdrive for your 455 anyway. For my 509 powered 87 442 I used this outfit with great results but there are other companies that can build a great 200-4R with warranty etc. You can see my set up in my signature line and click photos button to see my 442.

Here is a helpful link with pictures and great info on that swap; http://www.robertpowersmotorsports.com

Edit Stage 1 should work for your goals but you should add the billet drum option for 500+ foot pounds of torque which is like a two to three hundred dollar option.

thanks for the link!!!!!!!! thats the info i needed.looks like the 200r isnt as bad as i was told.not alot of $ for a built up good overdrive transmission.

You might want to keep your numbers matching 442 specific transmission with your car. Extreme can provide a core if you don't want to pay shipping to send them yours or you can send them your core with instructions that you want it back. Also you might want to keep your numbers matching vin 9 442 specific motor below the bench for if you sell the car down the road. Some people looking to do a concurs type restoration might pass on your car if these things are not present.

In my opinion, for your purposes, i would def. go with a properly built 200r4. Built right it will hold up just fine, and you have better gears than the 700, plus no adapt plate to deal with. Also even if your not on the highway all the time, when you do get on it will be soooo worth it. Its what i have in my caprice and i have no complaints.
