a friend of mine has a 87'cutlass with all the 442 package.he says it is a y code car and is rare.i don't know much about the 442 cutlass's,but i can get a good deal on the car.it has a rebuild 68'350 rocket in it.

Eighth digit signifies engine size and BHP. 9 code is a standard 307 Olds. Y code signifies a HP or special order engine code. All 442's had a Y code IIRC. GET IT! I will always be a fan of the 442 and the really rare, H/O!

Sorry guys, but the '9' code engine is the 'high output' 307 found ONLY in 442's and H/O, and the 'Y' code engine is the standard sucky 307. If your friend has a Y in the VIN number, then he doesn't have a real 442 or he does but it has been re-vinned

$20 says it's just a Cutlass Salon.
Some people see bucket seats, rallye gauges and F41 suspension and think they've got something special, when in fact those were all standard equipment on the Salon.

thanks guys,i know something wasn't right about it.it had no 442 markings on it,but it does have the 8.5 rear in it.i look at it and it is a 3.42 gears with a locker in it.

Mine is a Salon, and has all that equipment, and may not be "special" as a 442 or H/O, but it's mine! 😀
Salons are the same as the Calais till 85, correct (85 saw the FWD Calais, IIRC)?
The 84 Calais I had was optioned just as my 87. Even the same interior and exterior colors.

well i think i well pass on it.
