A friend of mine wants me to build up the 307 in his 88. And before everyone says it i guess he is partial to his 307 and wants to build on that. I have spent the last month trying to convince him otherwise... makes my job easier. I am wondering if anyone here have any tricks or suggestions. Its a low compression motor (7a heads) and for horsepower raising the compression is my first hurtle. You can have the fanciest parts but at 8:1 compression NA, you wont have much.

Ditch that boat anchor! thats my honest opinion. I just sold my 307 VIN Y engine and all and traded up for a built 71 Olds 350 with 9:5:1.........8.5 10 bolt with 3.42 gears and TH350 and im not regretting one bit of it.............its over twice the motor in HP and basic same motor, just more cubes. Keep him from making the mistake of staying 307, he could dump *ss loads of money into it and still not get much.

You aint going to move any air through them damn heads either. 🙁 Not that its not possible to make power with a 307 but its not cost effective at all compared to buying a cheap 350/403 and doing something with that.

I certainly understand what you are saying. I'm not going for a track car or anything. Just something to get between the red lights a little faster. If I could talk him into building a 350 on a stand over a couple of months. Then taking an afternoon to drop the motor and buttoning up the wiring and getting everything good to go. Rather than turning his car into a rolling chassis for that period of time and there is good reason I told him 2 grand to get started but that looks like im not just going to be able to do top end. But if we port and polish some 5a heads and run a valve job on it. Those heads should flow enough for 250-275 hp.

Yep. Lots of labor for that lil bit o horspower and not that much torque either.

He is so hard headed I'm about ready to tell him No. I'm not sure that he understands quite yet that his car would almost be worth 5 times what he paid for it with any other motor in it. And if we would fab in a sbc in my area even if he wrapped it around a tree it would still be worth 1500 bucks. But that is way too much work.
