hello fellow g-body guys and gals! I need some help with a 99 Pontiac grand am 2.4L engine . the engine starts but It has a knock/rattle on the backside of the camshaft and will not rev smoothly at all . can anyone please give me some insight whats going on with the engine . I do not have much money to work with and very little time.

These were very prone to water pumps going bad and it is on the back of the engine lower than the cams.

you can feel it on the top ignition cover on the 4th cylinder it sorta sounds like a lifter be stuck and it doesn't have very much power if it is driven

Those have a lifter over valve spring. Most likely a spring broke or the lifter. Not a easy job to fix timing cover inner and outer along with cam sprockets need to be removed in order to remove the valve cover/upper cam holder and lower cam box. Then you can get to it. Timing chain is a pain to install. Most people see these motors and dont want to touch it. Imo time to go shopping for a car.

^^^I'd agree with that^^^. Sounds like a broken valve spring to me too. I'd start with a compression test. If it's low, you may very likely have a bent valve too. I wouldn't even bother pulling the head. Either get another engine or another car.

well I think you fellas are right I was thinking on the lines of a bent valve. A bent valve has happened to me before with my olds 350 and I don't know what to say about my wifes' car . the car has been good to us and I just fixed the tps sensor and the car ran great afterwards then this happen. if I was to get another engine then there is to many other possibility that goes with that . I think its time to let the little red grand am rip . I think what help the problem come to be is the tps was still cause high idle when the car was first started or any time it was driven then put into park and the rest of the gears. once again you guys have been a big help. this site is best and filled with knowledgeable people .got to love it 8)

I will be back with the compression test results . the first two cylinders had 150+ psi and didn't check the other 2

Is there anyway possible to swap a 3.4 or 3.8 L engine into the grand am or is that to much to ask for . would the computer have to be swapped

Those cars came with a 3.4. But you would need motor, trans, engine harnes and computer. Cheaper to buy a new car. Beside the 3.4 are basically junk.

You'd need to swap everything. The 2.4 has a unique bellhousing pattern that's totally different from the 60* family. Harness and computer are different too. Sorry.
