if you are going to pull the motor with the trans still bolted onto it then you are going to want to use one of these engine puller things.

they allow you to angle the engine front to rear, its a lot easier to get the engine/trans in and out when you can angle the complete assembly to drop in and pull out. Its also a lot easier if you have a buddy help you pull the motor and replace it. You can do it by yourself, but its a pain. I put in my big block with the transmission attached into my 78, and for the life of me i cant remember how i did it without one of those angle things and not break anything or kill myself, i just chalk it up to the fact my car loves me, doesn't want me hurt or worse and wanted the big block under her hood.

That is called a load leveler. What you are doing is pretty basic. A small tool set can do most anything your going to need it to do. Drain everything and then prepare for it to drain a bunch more when you lift the engine out. You should probably decide a plan of attack, such as if your going to take it out with the trans attached or just the engine itself. It might be a good idea to check out the seals in your transmission since the engine is out of the way. Make sure you use some good bolts to lift your engine not the cheap shiny silver looking ones that they sell at TSC. That is all I guess. Your doing a pretty simple thing, even it being your first time it is not too hard.

not its just the engine not connected to the trans

If its just the engine then its pretty straight forward. You might have to pull a front tire and slide the cherry picker in from the side like I had to but after that it should lift right out.

Sometimes the legs of the engine hoist won't fit under the lower control arms and you can't get the hook close enough to the motor. The solution is to run the front wheels up on two thick planks, thereby raising the car a few crucial inches. This is a must-do on "F" bodies, but I've had it happen on our cars too. Removing the hood can help get it out cleanly.
