So, what has been done to convert the old R12 systems? Have you done Vintage Air, a 134 conversion, or what?

I have the 85 Bonne on my avatar. It has an R12 system, and I have scored 1 1/2 short refill cans. I'm worried that if I have a leak, I may be looking at a full-on 134 conversion.

Talk to me; whatcha got?

Run your r-12 system until you need to replace the compressor, makes the conversion easier. Get a compressor, accumulator, orfice tube, some oil that is compatible with R-134( pag oil i think), a R-134 conversion kit that has the valve adapters in it, and your refrigerant. After you take apart the system, blow it all out as well as possible, you can even use a cleaning gun with some de-natured alcohol, blow thru the condenser, and evaporator, and all the lines. You are trying to get out as much of the old oil as possible. Once you get it clean put the oil in the compressor and accumulator according to the instructions and put it all together. Vacuum it down and charge it up. The conversion works best on vehicles with electric fans, you can use a relay to turn on the fans when the ac is on, but it will work with mechanical fans just make sure the clutch is in good shape. Charge weight is realy inportant, do not overcharge.
