So i just finished my engine swap a while ago. I took it too get a emissions test so i could renew my tags and.....FAILED! Reason why i failed was cuz my car was running rich. It was high on HC and CO which could be contributed to the carb not being adjusted lean enough and a few vacuum leaks i found . I also failed the visual inspection on my air injection system. From what i was told it was missing parts or disconnected. I know the air injection system has two hoses going to the air injection pipes that screw on to the headers. another hose goes down to the cats, but my question is where the other port on the diverter valve goes to. I thought it goes to the air cleaner but there is no place to plug the hose in on it. My car originally was missing a bunch a of smog equipment when i acquired it. It passed the test last year both the dyno and emissions portion but not this year! So i need to find where that port goes to, I am pretty sure i can run the carb lean enough to pass. I will try to post pics of it later, but any advice on how your air injection system is connected will be helpful. BTW it is a 85 Grand Prix in which i swapped the 305 to a 350, Edelbrock 1405 carb, Hooker headers with the air injection pipes with 2.5 pipes, dual cats, and 02 sensor hooked up. I have looked in my Haynes manual and my emissions label but didn't seem to find any info. Help! I have a few days to get it retested and need to see what is needed.THANKS!

The third port on the Diverter valve Assembly goes to the catalytic converter. Originally, your car would have had a 3 way catalyst with a pipe that connected to the middle of the cat. This is an air chamber that separated the two catalyst cores and the added air allowed for more complete reaction within the substrate.

Your car would have originally had an evaporative emissions system, EGR, computer carb, knock sensor, thermostatic air cleaner, AIR system, 3 way single cat, etc. A lack of any one of those devices can be cause for visual failure in a state that requires a visual certification.

I already have a hose going down to the cats from the port that is facing down on the air diverter valve. Then the other two going to the injection pipes, the port i am talking about faces up on the valve, here are some pics.
I have the evap system, egr, cats. when i went to get the test done i put on my old air cleaner. I don't have the carb . distributor, or knock sensor anymore...maybe i have the Air injection hooked up wrong. :?
Thanks 85 Cutlass for you help! 😀 [/img]

It's been so long that I removed the A.I.R system on my '87 Camino 305 I had to think for a while. I believe the unused port on your valve needs a hose routed to the air cleaner. It's only an air intake hose, so it shouldn't make any difference in the HC and CO readings, but at least it will look complete. I've passed emissions test in PA for over 10 years without an A.I.R. system. I covered my tracks well for the visual inspection, including replacing the exhaust manifolds with similar non-A.I.R. manifolds. The only evidence is the plug in the air cleaner hole, and a short piece of capped tubing on the cat. I was banking on the theory that no inspector would remember which 20 year old cars had A.I.R and which did not, since there was little evidence it was ever there. Now I have Classic Car plates, so I'm emission exempt.

Lol! I hopefully have two more years for emissions testing on my car then i qualify for collector plates. Problem is that there is a bill in legislation that may require cars from 1973 "I think" and up to get smog tested every year :x Hopefully it doesn't pass and i am free to modify my car unless i sell it to somebody else. As for the air cleaner there isn't a place to connect that hose to..I kept the original air cleaner for the emissions test so unless the air cleaner isn't original i am confused... I have been looking for a pic or diagram on the web and came up with nothing. The messed up part is that inspector must have not gotten laid or what cuz he was a dick when i was talking to him. He almost closed my hood then opened it up again and called his supervisor too take a second look. They stared at it for at least 15 minutes before testing it, and taking my money! I asked why it failed the visual and they told me they weren't authorized to give any advice! Has anybody passed a emissions test using a "stock" crate engine with a 1405 Edelbrock Carb?

Dammit.... now I gotta pull out the service manuals...

OK, according to the GM diagram I am looking at, there are the following connections: Converter Air, Port Air, Air from pump, divert air. It appears that the port in question is labeled "By-Pass Air to Air cleaner" in another diagram. However, this book is an Oldsmobile book, and Chevy may differ. I am running a 305 HO air cleaner base from a Camaro on my car and do not recall it having a hose connection on it. As I do not know where the diverter valve is (nor do I wish to find it at 5AM), I will posit a speculation that the port in question outputs to a round, black muffler (about 3 in in diameter by about 1.5 in tall) I seem to remember it having instead of outputting to the air cleaner base.

As for your car's failure of the visual, those guys should have told you why it failed. You do have a right in a criminal court to know the evidence against you, and thus the government should be legally required to tell you why you failed your emissions test. It is awful hard to fix a problem that is not explained to you. Your Edelbrock carb would be my guess though as it lacks provisions for the evaporative emissions hoses and the computer controls that are integral parts of the emissions controls on your car.

your making me nervous reading this. i just yanked my computer carb and distributor for non computer stuff, retained the factory manifolds, with capped air tubes, and kept the air pump with a line still throwing air into one of the cats. well thats what im in the the process of, my cars still got 2 years to be exempt, but has classic tags, gotta love connecticut. normally they dont do visual though around here, if they did none of the mustangs would pass. cant really help you to much on it though, dont know enough about it other than first instinct is to get rid of it. just feelin for you cause im praying i aint gonna run into the same situation.

Yeah smog police here are trying to get smog exempt areas reinstated into testing cars 73 and up. I used to have my 79 GP registered in one those counties where a buddy used to live. Till i got a $260 fine for for falsely registering my car. We have pretty much have had visual inspections, so nothing to radical on mods as long as it passes the visual and sniffer. But as long as the emissions components are present and "appear" to be functional i should be ok......
