I went down to get a new alter. for my 84 buick regal limited with a 3.8 v6 and it didnt fit. it was about a 1/2 to 3/4 to short. and the top bolt wouldnt fit in the bolt hole. they tell me that the alter had to be rig up from last ower, it has the factory brackets.. the alter has 70A on it so I take it that its a 70 amp. right.? ok I cant read the stickers on my door and find out when the born date was any clue how I can get a new one without having some A$$ CLOWN rebuilding it.. thanks..

70A is a 70 Amp alt.
The stock alt for your would be the same as thousands of other 78-87 G bodys, I would take the old one off and take to the parts store so you can match it up to a new one.

Your stock alternator should be a 10SI or 12SI. All are the same size and were installed on millions of GM cars. As for rebuilding your original, unless the windings are shorted or the diodes are bad (both easily tested with a volt/ohm meter), you can get all the parts to rebuild it yourself for about $15. That includes bearings, brushes, and regulator.
