Didnt they used to do this in the early 70s as the shorter wheel base would transfer weight to the rear wheels quicker??
 
I believe that was just moving the rear axle forward, along with the wheel wells. I think Musclecars on the Powerblock did this to one of their projects also.
 
A couple of you guys are thinking of the old AFX drag cars (altered wheelbase, pre curser to the funny car) They had the axles scooted up and the engines setback 20%....

The car shortening trend started in the 70's, and there wasn't really a purpose for it.... Most of the guys did it for shock value, or because chicks thought it looked cute....Or it was a good idea when they were on acid.... Not to sure.
 
Indeed looks a bit strange, but I'll have to check some pics of other 67 Pontiacs to compare it. I wonder if they left the door windows in or not.
