Has anyone ever used a marine camshaft in a regular vehicle engine? I have heard some says it is just no good and others say that they are fine in either a boat or vehicle usage. Any experience or insight is greatly appreciated.
When I was helping a buddy build his '38 Chevy pickup we used a cam from a cracked marine 350 in a junkyard 283. Ran good and had great torque but not much up high. For some reason it had a killer exhaust note. I've never heard another engine sound quite like it. Years later after the engine had been replaced, he put a degree wheel on it to try to get the specs and he said the numbers made no sense on the duration side (I suspect he was doing something wrong) but it actually had a pretty small lift.
I think marine spec cams are designed for low speed torque and constant steady speed running, not for road use.
However you might get good gas mileage traded against modest performance with such a setup, dont forget you will need the rest of the engine (carb, timing etc) properly tuned just as you would if you were to put a wild cam in.
