I had 2.29's in my salon. I decided to go to 3.42's and ended up in a tight situation. 3K rpm at 55 and a top speed of about 85. If you are running a th350. DONT GO TO 3.42'S. Now im running the same gears and tires. But with a 700r4. This is the best combo i could ever think of. Pushes you back in the seat and deffinately has some pick up. And, only about 1900rpm's at 60. Its better than our 63 impala with a borg t5 and 3.73's. So moral of the story, go to 3.08's if you plan on sticking with a 3 speed.

I ran 3.42 with th350 i see no problem with it and car always pulls beyond 85. My cutlass with t10 trans will cruise 90mph with ease @ 2800 rpm which imo is nothing. I have a wagon with th350 and 4.10's now thats at 3500 at 55

4.30 gears and 1700 cruise rpm at 60 is where it's at. 🙂

I have 3.73s behind my TH400 and sbc 400 and I have no problems pulling past 85. I cruise at 55-60 at about 2800 rpm. I will be switching to 3.42s and a 496 stroker here soon. Kinda sounds like you have a tired motor or something else isnt right.

I don't know how you can do that. For one, gas mileage. But i personally cant sit there and listen to an engine turn 3000 for more than about a minute..

Whats gas mileage. :?: I go by feet per gallon. Maybe thats why your car tops at 85 you cant stand listening to 3k for more then a minute.

I got 3.55s and cruise at 70mph. 28" tires helps.

I havent had any problems topping out now. Using a gps for a speedometer and max speed is 119mph

i run 2.73 gears and will pull 120 plus,,you have other issues if you cant run any faster then 119,,,my motor is 8 yrs old and run it like i stole ,,same motor with 373 got 17 mpg,,,273 yields 18,,,i think your combo is way off,,,i have a brand new in the box set of 3,08s and a fresh posi unit going in next,,,if i had it to do over i would get 342s,,,

Im not saying that was topped out. I was in the process of passing someone so i figured why not. Don't you hate those cars with roof racks that look like cops?
