I have been hearing lately that prospective employers and universities are looking online for information of the private lives of people they are thinking about hiring or admitting. Things like looking at social networking sites for any pictures or blogs of people doing or thinking things they see as unprofessional. Some even go as far as asking for all of the social networking sites that people are part of. So, I ask, are they getting way too personal? Does this sort of thing have anything to do with the work performance of an employee? Does a drunken pic of someone at a party on their free time really prove anything?
I personally don't think they have the right to that sort of thing, which is why I use a false name on places like Myspace and the blogs I comment on (If you see Jim Bob anywhere, that's usually me...lol), and a secondary Email account for my online life. That way, it would be much harder for anyone to find my real thoughts and opinions. I also post no pictures of myself online so it is difficult to confirm my identity.
