Are front brake backing plates required?

Every truck I've ever built I've deleted the backing plates off the front brakes. Now in the 4wd world we do it cause it traps rocks and mud on the rotor. I've never seen any ill effects from it and thats on a daily driven truck.
In fact i'd imagine it would give a cleaner look and allow the heat to dissipate better. The only down side is dirty front wheels and if you are running good pads it shouldnt be a problem.

If you figure that on most aftermarket brake upgrades you have to remove them anyway I don't see a problem with it. They're really only there as dust shields. Might just have to clean your rims a little more often.
I don't even see how they would keep dust off the outside of the rims. I would think they would help more with keeping dust off the inside of the rims and the steering/suspension components, but I don't know for sure.
