Asteroid 2007 TU24: Discuss.

This asteroid is supposed to come within 1.4 times the distance of the earth to the moon on January 29. Will anyone else here try to see it? Anyone afraid it will kill us all? Also, what is your opinion about the asteroid that may hit us in 2036?

BTW, how about the whole Mayan calendar ending in 2012 and Nostradamus giving the same date for the end thing. Coincidence? Are both full of crap?

Well, I never said I thought it would actually hit us. I did a little reading and have very little fear that it will come to pass any more than I would have believed that the Cassini probe would put radioactive waste into the Earth's atmosphere when all the greenies were crying about that non-issue. I went to NASA's or JPL's site to look at the official track, and also read a few crackpot sites too to see if they had any valid points. I was just curious as to the thoughts of others.

Now, the Asteroid that may impact Earth in 2036 does concern me because it sounds like it has a real chance.

I always try to see anything that comes anywhere near us. Did you catch Comet Holmes at it's best last month? That was some excellent stuff.

The 2036 asteroid I think you're talking about is 99942 Apophis, right? Not too worried about it... I think the odds of it actually hitting earth are 1 in 50,000 or somewhere around that range. As more measurements of it's orbit are made, the chances become increasingly slimmer. I'd be far more concerned with the fact that, after 2029, there is a possibility of it entering orbital resonance with earth.

Either way... I don't believe that it is more than a thousand feet in diameter, which would cause a bit of localized damage, but... it's nothing like a "dinosaur killer" or anything that's going to create a global catastrophe were it to actually collide with us.

Where does Nostradamus give an exact date? I thought he was far too vague for that sort of thing.

nostradamus dont give and exact date but rather what will happen something about stuff lining up in the universe and that happens to be in 2012 then also the mayans callender ends that year and the egyptions, i ching had somehting about it

there was a program on the history channel about it something like its might be possible if all these things align it could effect the earths orbit cause it to wobble

and yea i kno nostradamus dosent like give exact things but like the whole september 11 stuff if u lived back when building were lucky if they reached 10 storys high and were made out of rock and the only means of transpertation was either walking or a horse what would u think is u seen a plane crasshing into a builing that big how would u write that down

we all die someday regardless of what happens 1 years form now or 4 or even 30 years from now thats y u just got to live life to the fullest

Eh, poppycock. All the planets put together exert something like 1.8% the gravitational force that the moon does. The moon varies it's gravitational force immensely over the course of it's orbit and nothing happens. And, I mean... nothing happened when the planets aligned in 1982, or in 2000.

Again... not too worried.
