I'm writing this post in the hopes that people will be careful when selecting contractors and early warning signs.

Back in June of this year, my father hired a man named Brian Olle of "First Impressions Buildings" to build us a 1500 square foot metal building that was going to be our garage. He agreed to build the garage itself, the retaining wall, and a car-port attachment and slab in front of the garage. He was to do all this over a 2 month period contract for $25,000.

When we had other contractors look at the site and we were taking in bids, almost everyone else quoted 35,000 to 40,000 because they would have to dig down in order to pour a 4 inch slab.

From day 1, this guy was so full of sh*t his eyes were brown. Kept giving us the run around with materials, saying he was going to show up on this day, or he was always down in the valley (south texas near mexico). We had one crew come out who excavated it down to where it needed to be, but then Brian would never pay his subcontractors and sometimes we had to pay them ourselves. Hell he even sent out this 70 somethin Mexican man to work by himself while his wife suffering from Leukemia would sit in the shade. We thought he was going to have a heart attack on the job!

So two months pass, no slab, just wooden forming left after his subcontractors walked off the site. At one point he paid his subs 2500 to keep working and they ran off because he owed them money on past jobs. The contract went up at the end of August. But our lawyer advised not to pursue because he would probably file bankruptcy and we would never see the money again. Brian at this time stated and promised that he would finish the job.....he just needed a little more time.

Since August, we have only spoken to Brian a total of 3 times. We had KENS 5 "Eyewitness Wants to Know" get involved in the matter. He tracked down Brian based on the address on his drivers license (we scanned a copy). Turns out it was his fathers house and his father said his son has been scamming for 5 years now and hasn't spoken to his son in two years. At the same time the news was getting involved, we had a $100,000 lawsuit waiting. Our lawyer told Brian last week that if he did not pay back the 17,800 that the lawsuit would be filed. He didn't show on friday, and our lawyer gave him one last chance and told him 9 in the morning today.

He did not show up until 2 this afternoon telling everyone different stories that he was told noon not 9. He finally dropped off a check to our lawyers attorney. When my father went to cash the check, because the news was airing the story today, my father saw that the b*st*rd made the check out to himself. My father contacted the Barry Davis at Kens 5 and our lawyer, who became furious. The District Attorney contacted him and said "If you are not at that bank by five this afternoon and cash that check, you will be in jail by 6 with felony charges and will be sent to a federal penetentiary.

The little b*st*rd showed up and paid up in full. At the same time we heard a phone call he had. He was in the middle of conning another person!!! Same stories and BS he told us over the past 6 months. So beware deadbeat contractors and do your research. And watch out for Brian Olle!

Holy smokes that's f-ing crazy, positive end of it you got your money back but the aggravation must of really got to you and your dad! dam that sux!

Sorry to hear this. makes me sick that people make a living off of screwing other people over and do not even care about how they are affecting the people they are scamming :puke:

i hope everything is resolved and you will be able to get a garage built.

What a POS. At least you got your money back, most people aren't so lucky, the scammer just dissappears . And as they say, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is BS.

MAN! Crap like that makes me irrate (what I'm thinking uses ALOT more cuss words than what i've typed)!
I sincerely hope you both get to see your garage (sanctuary) go up ASAP.
When I built mine (1080sq. ft.) I soon learned it wasn't nearly big enough!!! They are never big enough!!!
One thing I did while building my "shop" was to dig a utility trench from the house to the shop. I dug the trench by hand, in Michigan clay 4 foot deep by 24 feet long ( 5 1/2 feet where I tied into the sewer line for my toilet. In the trench I buried a water line, telephone line, cable T.V. line, cad 5 line, secondary power line, natural gas line, and the sewer line. I wish I would have buried a 3-way switch line though. I tell you this as food for thought only.
My dad passed 13 years ago, but he's always with me in the shop (I've got a big picture of him on the wall).
You two enjoy your garage and your time together, because it's the best of times!

Doug

You probably should have made sure he had insurance, and all the proper paperwork before hiring him...

No scammer ever has the proper documentation.

We already planning on putting in a utility trench. We don't plan on putting in heat since our winters down here don't last long enough anyways. The property is 2 acres on the side of a mountain. The house sits on the front of the property while the garage is roughly 50 yards behind the house up the mountain. I'll have to take a picture next weekend from where the garage is going to be. There is a 180 degree view of the mountains and valley around us. So when you walk out of the garage, you have an amazing view.

A close friend of ours Hank Kruse passed away last May from cancer and just before he died, he managed to bring us two loads of fill for the project and even helped tow my roadrunner home. Were going to have a "Loving Memory" sign made just for him that will be mounted on the garage and my Roadrunner's restoration will be dedicated to him. Here is a post I put up not too long after he died:

I will always miss and love him, may he rest in peace.

BTW the contractor gave us a sob story that he was building metal buildings in arkansas, but moved to south texas to help pay bills for his parents and his mother who was terminally ill.
