back firing

what would cause the motor to back fire through the carb on cold start up and then back fire through the exhaust on shut down when the motor is hot? is it just timng to far advanced or retarded.

Could be timing or some severe vacuum leaks. By the way if youre car is idling high and you shut it off it will backfire.
