What are you big block guys getting for total crank endplay and rotating torque? I see a million different specs and answers but nothing conrete. Engine is a 496 Scat stroker. Im getting 25-28 lbs-ft for rotating torque and about .002-.003" for endplay. This on a brand new engine that has never fired. Does my endplay look tight? That is with rods torqued down and ARP main studs torqued down. Maybe im just being paranoid?

That is tight for end play on either a SBC or BBC, what is your crank journal size out at, and what is your main bearing bore size and rod bearing bore size. I have always verified the assembly had the oil clearances I wanted I never got hung up on rotating resistance things like ring tension and assembly lube used can always effect that number

The main bores were bored back to the factory 2.937. Rods should also be factory size but I dont have a bore gauge to confirm. I checked end play with everything torqued down which now im reading is wrong. Many sources show it's supposed to be done without the rods and without mains torqued?

I wouldn't do it with the rods in, I always lube up the mains set the crank torque the caps use a dead blow hammer to set the crank towards one end, set the dial and shift the crank to check it, if you don't have a bore gauge you will just have to trust the machine shop I wouldn't get hung up in rotating resistance

I figured I would update this. I took it all apart again and sanded the thrust bearing down. Got my endplay with no rods bolted down and only mains torqued to .007-.008" which is right in spec. I torqued the rods down and now my rotating torque is down to about 23-25 lbs-ft. Before it was about 26-28 lbs-ft with only .0025-.003" of backlash. Im much happier with this and im definatley glad I tore it down again to fix this.

Good to hear you got I would also be happier with that, goes to show you that all the little things add up

rotating torque should be 30-40lbs end play .003-.007
Everywhere I read it shows .003" to .011" for endplay and rotating torque 20-25. I went off of what I seen on stroker builds. Looks like im right where they recomend I be.

double check my book last night end play .005-.007 one reference says 30-40lbs rotating another says no greater that 35-40lbs. make sure pistons are all installed right direction and rings spaced properly.

When I talked to the Buick God on my 455 he said .005 was too tight. When I talked to another Buick God he said most of them were .005-.007 so I hit it with a hammer and got .006 so I went with that and the 455 is running faster that hell! It works for me!
