Hello everybody... Was gunna be getting a roof rack for my cutlass cruiser and I wanted to he able to take bikes on it. Has anybody done this? I can't seem to find an attachment or anything... I guess worst case I'll build something myself. But I figured Ide see if it had been done befor first
Mike,
I wouldn't think of using the original rack for carrying bikes, etc. I think they were meant for carrying light luggage...if even that. They are light duty racks to say the least.
You're better off making your own heavier duty rack.
There were racks available that clipped onto the rain gutters on older vehicles. My dad used one back in the day on his '62 Chevy Belair to carry ladders. It worked quite well. In fact I modified a version to haul my 11' race boat at the time. It also worked quite well.
I don't think you can find them in your auto parts and accessory store anymore.
Or you can make a version similar to what was used on VW bugs and buses. If you can weld, it would be a piece o' cake.
