Hey folks I'm looking to black out my chrome. I'm not wanting to fork out the cash for wo2 trim so I thought I'd try out blacking out my chrome before I bought some wo2 trim. For those that have done this does SEM trim paint require primer? I've read of people using primer and some not. I'd like to only do this once if it turns out nice. Also how many cans would I need? All of the lower trim is gone now. I pploaded a pic of my project. Thanks

I just used black plastidip. I cleaned the trim really well and just sprayed it right on! You can do minimal masking too because the plastidip will peel off, so if you want to go back to chrome all you have to do is peel it off.

Yup, plastidip. I've tried painting the factory chrome and it is rarely a good permanent solution once the stone chips start.

Take a scothbrite pad or even a brown cookie wheel with a die grinder and scuff the chrome really well with out creating any deep groves, then clean it real good, I whipped mine with alcohol, let it dry pass. once its dry pass a dry cloth over it, spray it with bin primer or self etching primer. Get a fair coat on it. Let that sit a day and inspect it. make sure you didnt miss any spots but didnt make it to thick. Now your ready to paint it. You can put one or 2 coats of what ever color you want but you dont want it to be too thick. Last step install and enjoy.

The 2 main things are in the prep. Chrome ir really smooth and tough to stick to. Make sure its scuffed real good and the second is the finish. It cant be too thick

I agree that the prep is key and I also use a Scotchbrite pad to scuff it up first but I have also found instead of SEM trim paint that Duplicolor semi-gloss and low gloss black engine enamel are very durable in this application and more resistant to chipping.
