Buick 455 ?'s

IS the intake flat? A warped one will not seal very well at all. In my experience I just used rtv for the valley seals and tossed the rubber ones. Never had a problem. A friend of mine insisted on using the rubbers, but they leaked in a short time. We ended up just using rtv in the end.

The problem I have with RTV it doesn't dry fast enough if you are at the track and you need to pull the intake. I will always try to use the seals but today I had to reseal the inkake at the track and it still feels a little soft after 4 hours. I resealed it yesterday and started it after 1 hour and it leaked this morning when I was getting teched. It made me miss today to practice and first round qualifications at the NMCA Finals in Indy. I didn't have any more composite gaskets for the Buick 455 and had to alter the stock gasket to use with the Kenne Bell Cool Runer intake because the center sits deeper than stock. Even after 4 hours the GMS sealer still feels soft. I will start it tomorrow and hope for the best. I can't use the seals since my heads are shaved so much but I tried.
I think if you use some fast drying RTV and apply a film across the seal and a bead at the corners you should be fine. I need to shave the block more so I have room for the seals.

The Right Stuff by Permatex. No leaks to date w/o end seals.

I've been using permatex "ultra black". I'll use it with a gasket. Coat both sides of the gasket with a thin, but visible layer, and stick the gasket on, stuff works great! And it dries to the consistency of latex rubber, so it comes off easily next time you have to re-do the seal. I'd recommend it to anyone.

After using Ultra Black, or Grey RTV (from Permatex) for many years, I finally tried the RIGHT STUFF! It seals/glues tight!

Its good sh*t. Much faster setting. I just hope I never have to remove that intake again 🙂.

I haven't built alot of Buicks, just 5 or 6, 350's and 455's. But I have built alot of SBs and BBC, all of these engines I have tossed the end seals and used "The Right Stuff" and have never had a leak in all these years. Like online170 said "it's good sh*t". It has a thicker, pastier consistency than RTV, and is definitely less greasy and sets up alot quicker. It does have a hell of a grip when cured that's for sure, some strong prying may be required for removal.LOL
