I've got an 88 SS monte carlo. I'm prepping it for paint and am debating weither or not to take off the front and rear bumper covers. Has anyone had experience with this? I would hate to have my paint start flaking a year from now because the primer and paint wasn't applied properly, but it sounds like a lot more work to remove and reinstall those extra pieces. I'm not lazy, I just want to know if it's worth it, I don't have a show car. anyones 2 cents?

Yes, it's worth it.

You don't need to completely remove them, just loosen them up enough so there's a nice even gap in between them and the sheetmetal. That way the paint can wrap around the edges of both the body and the covers, and you won't get the flaking, cracking, or chipping that you would get if you were to leave them on and just paint over the seam...

Yeah it's well worth it friend.........If your taking the time to paint her, might as well do it right....Post some pics of her ....I'm sure we all would like to see the finished product...heck even some b4 and after 😀

Well guys thanks for the advice. I'll try to take pictures as I go, but I just want to get it done so no promises on the during pictures. heres what I'm starting with. It looks better in pictures than real life. Theres no clear left on it anymore. let me know what you think, it's going charcoal.

Looks great. Not a bad starting place to be friend......... I myself have near future bodywork plans as well..I have a goodmark cowl hood and a '86 Monte SS trunk lid with spoiler to go on my ride.I figure I might as well have the door jams blown in while she's there..Anyways, great looking car ...Good luck

The goodmark hoods seem to fit really nice. I honestly didn't want a 4" cowl, but a deal came around and i couldn't pass it up. how talls your cowl? has anyone ever tried to smooth the rear spoiler into the trunk lid? I've been tempted but think the filler will crack if it flexs at all.
does anyone know a good reliable source to get the front fender extensions from? mine are past their prime and I've seen them on ebay but don't want to get stuck with a knock off that doesn't fit. anyone had any experience or fixed wavy cracked plastic? I'll post another picture once I get the glass and bumpers stripped.

I still don't have pictures, but I got everything stripped off the car and have started sanding. I'm supposed to go pick up paint this saturday, they had to get one of the primers in last week but had everything else.
