I was at the junk yard toay and noticed a Cadillac with a 472. I was wondering if anyone here knows anything about that engine. Would it be worth it for me to get it? Do they have lots of power potential?
They can be a hugh bang for the streetable reliable pump gas dollar to about 400HP 520TQ or with ported heads to about 500HP 570TQ. They can also be a fairly easy swap into a gbody if you are in the know. They are way overlooked and misunderstood. Contrary to popular assumption they ARE NOT overly expensive or hard to get parts for. Except for high end raceing parts for a 700HP deal. All maintenence stuff at any parts store. I put one in a gbody and have about any info you would need as I have been involved with them for years. See my signature. Check out this forum www.cadillacpower.com/forum also www.northernautoparts.com engine kits. Their are several Cadillac dedicated vendors some with mounting / instruction kits for droping into a gbody. Also shorty headers that work in the gbody.
steal? STEAL? i would never steal a 472ci engine that can produce over 600 ponds of torque!!!! i would kill for one though. 😀
actually i always wanted to put the caddy 500 in the monte but my brother told me it'd be too heavy. my understanding now is that while it's heavier than a SBC it's quite a bit ligher than a BBC. so it probably wouldn't have killed my handling. why did i listen to him? 😢 i would have had a running engine for free.
500 Caddy ready to run carb to oil pan, iron heads, water pump, cast iron exhaust manifolds 599lbs, with Edlebrock aluminum intake 573.
All 68 thru 73 had the better small chamber heads. All 70 to 76 Eldorados had the 500ci. All 75 & 76 modle Cadillacs had the 500. 74 and newer had HEI. The only difference between the 472 & the 500 is the crank.
I have no idea what year it is. It does not have a carb. The junkyard charges like 100 bucks for any v8 engine 😀😀 . So im thinking it is a pretty good deal. I dont think I would have to do any mods to it to have lots of fun. I am gonna see if I can scrape some money together fast so I can get it. My dad might be pretty pissed if I get it because I have enough stuff from my Cutlass taking up space in the garage but oh well. If I dont use it I can probably make money off of it from selling it.
I'd get your hands on it. Most of the old Caddy V8's are excellent engines, and that would be something exciting to get in to a G body other than the run of the mill SBC. I'd definitely take your time to put it together nicely and use it, it will be well worth the challenge. I haven't seen any of those around for years. As all of them were originally in 6000 pound land barges, many were destroyed in demo cars or just plain scrapped and melted. They did guzzle some major gas, but like the big SUV's of now the typical new Caddy buyer of the early to mid 70's couldn't care less about MPG. But man were they smooth runners, with that mind boggling torque the others mentioned that got those boats rolling.
