i got a -79 camino and its rear axle looks like 8 1/2.Ex-owners says that its the cars original axle.If so,what type of axle could it be?Wanna know if theres a c-clipses on it.I just cant take the time to go to open the axle right now.Carrier model says its A 8 1/2.Aint it usually 7 1/2 in this model caminos?Gear ratio is 3.08.

Look at the housing from the rear. If you see the two dreaded "Fangs" "v v"sticking out of the bottom of the housing, you have the 7 1/2. If the bottom of the housing has squared corners, you have an 8 1/2. No fifth gen Caminos came with a 8.5. All G. M. rears have c clips. I am pretty sure ypu could order factory 3.08 gear sets for 79. - Jon

Not true. The '71-71 Skylark and Cutlass(Also GS n 442) 8.5 ten bolt was equipped with bolt in axles. These are 28 splines. Good stuff if you can find one.

Thank You, I was refering to g bodys and will try to be more specific in the future.

No prob. Just thought I'd throw that out. All GM is a pretty big group.

question: does chevy make any non c-clip rears? i seem to recall that the bolt i ones are 12 bolt BOP's, but i'm not sure.

Depends on how far back you want to go. The tri-fives or at least 55 had a diff that had a third member like the nine inch, so i would think it didn't use c-clips. I'm not 100% on this though. Anyone else?
