Now that I have your attention: my name is Justin and I seriously have no desire to put a Honda motor in my Olds. :puke:
A year ago I found a 1981 Cutlass Supreme in some guys back yard. I went and talked to him and came back the next day to pick it up. This all started my addiction. I then sold the olds for a truck, which I am now trading for another cutlass! Later this week I am picking up a 1984 cutlass Supreme with a chev 350, (Had a 305 in it.)
P.O.'s buildup includes:
Performer RPM intake
Edelbrock 4 barrel carb
New 2.5'' exhaust setup with 16'' blue bottles
Slight cam
B&M shift kit
My plans include:
Racing seats ( included with car)
Throw a locker in the back
Headers?
better ignition setup
Better flowing heads https://www.patriot-performance.com/xca ... =76&page=1
I'm just trying for a reliable summer cruiser.
What all else would I have to do to my motor to get around 300 hp?

Save up for some heads, personally i dont know too much about chev 350's to olds 350's, but if i had that car what i would do to make it quicker is..
Aftermarket heads
Bigger valves
Full roller valvetrain
Full tube type headers
shave the heads to achieve a bigger compression (pump gas 9.5-10.5:1)

If the car doesn't already have a better rear in the car, START with doing that.
You wont get anywhere quick with highway gears and a hot motor. Trust me I know, all you'll get is slow take offs and land speed records  :blam:

:
What would be a good set of heads?
Also what is wrong with my rear end? Or is it just to weak for the application?
And what would be a good gear ratio? I want decent mileage still as it will be a DD in the summer. low gears and a 3 speed transmission are a bad idea 😢

id run a pair of vortec heads off a 96-98 chevy with a vortec intake for a carb, that should open up the lungs without putting a big dent in your pocket and get some 3.42 rear gears. thats my opinion

There's nothing wrong with the 7.5" rear end until you get to locking it up. Once you put a posi unit in there you start putting some extra torque on the axles. If you don't plan on roastin the tires or getting a serious wholeshot then I wouldn't bother with the rear you have now. But if you want a posi for true performmance, I wouldn't bs it and go straight for a bolt in 9" or 12 bolt from moser or strange. Or you could try and find a 4 link 8.5 but good luck with that one my friend.

Lol dude good one i would love to see you try and put a honda motor in it you for sure be different lol.

Horsepower usually doesn't bolt on. And it's kind've hard to answer "what part will give me more power?"

If i where you, I'd shop around and build an engine on paper, get some good opinions, then build it. if you've got a solid bottom end then go from there. Pick your cam first, then heads, Then everything else, like ignition, carb...ext. Your carb/ignition are only going to bring out the best of what you've got already.

Another thing, it wouldn't hurt to slap a fresh set of bearings while you have the engine out.

Good luck with your project! 😀

Thanks for all the replies 🙂
I have not done much motor work at all. I am Currently a Jeep guy and am a little better with the whole suspension/ bolt on parts area. I will start with a better set of heads as mentioned, after I figure out what cam is in the motor.

You almost got the :puke: when I saw the thread title!

Don't be afraid to explore the Olds option for an engine. My Grand Prix came with a 305 sbc, but the more I think about it, the better a Poncho 455 sounds instead of replacing it with a bigger sbc.

There's something unique and nostalgic about recreating that muscle the g-bodies never had.....well except for GN's anyway.

An Olds 350, 403 or 455 would be right at home in the Cutlass.
