So I have a guy that claims he has a posi for a gbody from an 88 cutlass. I asked him what gears and he said he didnt know but he thinks there 3:08's the car had 38k when they took it off. I asked how he knew it was a posi and he said they did a few burn outs with it before they took it off, and that the rear has a tag or something that says g80.
I looked at the sticky for the rear info but there was no mention of an 88? It about a 40 min drive what do you guys think. Would you check it out. I didnt ask about any other number because I was afraid that he figure out its worth more than he is selling it to me for.

G80 is limited slip(posi). It would just be a basic 7.5. Depending on price I would look at it especially if you don't have a limited slip already.

Well Thats what I figured it would be. Im ok with that. I just want a nice posi. Does 3:08 sound right for that year.

Hey Guys thanks. I picked up the rear on friday night, The car was still there totalled. It was a 442 cutlass. posi rear they say they think its 308. Thats perfect for me right now. I payed 270 for it. the car had 38k on it. It was garaged until the son took it for a ride. We've all heard those stories. I think I scored. I only have a 350 with a mild cam and a 350 trans. At some point Ill do a full build, and do maybe a 9inch with gears to along woth the combo. I want to drive it until I have just about everything I can possibly have before I tear it apart. Thanks again.
Right now the car is at paint once I get it back Ill do another thread with pics and introduce myself better.

If it is from an actual 442 you may have REALLY scored. 442s came equipped with beefier 8.5" rearends with either 3.73:1 or 3.42:1 gears. The only thing you will need to change is the driveshaft must be shortened 1". It is worth it for the extra strength and better gears and should be fairly cheap.

To see if it is a 7.5" or 8.5", compare the rear to this picture:

I was also thinking if it was from a 442, and it was an original car, it would in fact be an 8.5 rear. If so, you scored like a fat rat.😉 It probably has 3.73 gears in it.
