As stated above.

The engine is a bone stock 1983 smogger 305.

And yes , I know not to expect much if anything as far as performance , just need to know if it will work.

I am a Pontiac guy so that is why I am being very cautious, don't know SBC that well.

Some Pontiac heads you would need to open the pushrod hole for clearance , which if needed on this ,I will just go 1.5.

Just to be clear , don't want to frag the valvetrain , no other mods needed?

So bolt em on, set the valves and go?

Thanks

If you are just using a stamped steel rocker you will be fine. If you are installing a larger bodied roller rocker I would probably install some screw in studs (not really needed, but more security)

Most likely the $65 summit stamped steel cheapies.

In "How to Build Horsepower vol1 " by David Vizard he writes "I found that installing 1.6 rockers can (depending on the camshaft) slightly broaden the horsepower curve and add as much as 18hp to a 300hp smallblock. In most case this extra horsepower was obtained solely from increasing the intake lift;adding 1.6 on the exhaust valves results in no further increase. My test engine, equiped with a typical performance street cam and 1.6 intake rockers, did not show any power gain below 3500rpm.From this point upward, however, the addedintake lift improved breathing, and that produced more horsepower-frequently about 5%."

"As the ratio goes up,loads on the rockerarm, rockershaft or studs, valvestems and springs all increase. However, increasing the ratio 0.1(eg.,from 1.5 to 1.6)can usally be accomplished without any adverse side effects."

"This is a great way to gain valve lift without changing camshafts or significantly altering the duration. And,remember, increasing lift often increases both bottom end torque and top end horsepower, particularly if valveliftis under 0.500-inch."

Im gonna do this same thing to my engine Shotgun do you have a link to those rocker arms you are looking at.At one time summit were selling rocker arms in offset ratio (8 1.6 rockerarms and8 1.5 rockerarms)i wanna go that route since i read a few topics were they state even on the exhaust side you wont ever see the benifts of the increased lift only on the intake.

the only thing I'd be worried about is valve spring pressure. I'm unsure how much pressure hte stock valvesprings put out. Make sure they can effectively actuate the valves and they dont go into coil bind. that would be the only issue I could see. Piston to valve clearance on a stock 305 is pretty large, I doubt youd have trouble with that. it doesn't take much effort to check the P t V clearance though. But relaly i'd be more worried about the springs.

I did it on mine with roller tipped ones and they are close but didn't touch the sides.
My recommendation is to put them on, set them and crank the motor over by hand a few times looking to make sure they clear.
Not all castings are exact so it may fit on mine, but you might have one hit the sides.
Well worth the $100+ I spent.
