Hello. I bought a jeep intermediate steering shaft to do the common jeep steering shaft swap. However, I cant get the jeep shaft to collapse! The old stock intermediate shaft collapses fine...is there something special that needs to be done to the jeep shaft to get it to collapse? Anyone have any tips?

I read a post on here somewhere saying that there are plastic clips holding it from collapsing. A quick hit with some heat should melt them and allow you to collapse it. I got one off a Grand Cherokee and did not have any issues with collapsing it.

The "clips" (actually, molded in place plastic buttons) are there to prevent the two parts from sliding apart when being installed on the assembly line. You can shear them by just pressing harder.

From what I recall. Installing mine, I first had to remove a plastic sleeve, then had to heat the area where the shafts converge.
I tried using some force at first, but it wouldn't budge. Heat is the trick. There is some type of rubberized goo holding the shafts together.

Thanks. I busted the plastic tabs off with a hammer. I'll try torching it when I get home tonight.

Heating the steering shaft joints with a torch worked. There was some goo in there, and the plastic tabs needed to be melted. Thanks all. New steering shaft looks and feels great!

is this from a jeep Cherokee or a jeep grand Cherokee?

A regular Cherokee.

It's fixed though, now. The torch worked 🙂
