I had to travel to Jaurez, Mexico for work this week. Just got here today. The vehicles down here are interesting. First we pulled into immigration to do the paperwork and there were 4 old beetles in the parking lot. I rarely see those any more. Saw some small car based Chevy trucks, probably the size of a new malibu, maybe even smaller. Also saw a few other vehicles I had not seen in the states. Only only one G-body so far, a mid 80s Regal. It was kind of done is a low rider style. Definately seeing more 50's, 60's, and 70's vehicles on the road than what I am used to seeing in Michigan. Nice to see how cars survive in this climate.

Well, they were still making new Beetles in Mexico until about 3-4 years ago, so they exist there in large numbers. Now, the car that has replaced it as Mexico's number one seller is called the Nissan Tsuru. You may recognize it as the 1991-94 Nissan Sentra. It sells there for I think $7500 brand new, and I wish I could buy one here! I would also be on the lookout for abandoned 60's musclecars--especially around Juarez. Many US cars went there during the 1st and 2nd Arab oil embargoes of the 1970's and are still there today.

There were also some oddball AMC cars sold there by a company called "Vehiculos Automotores Mexicanos (VAM)", which was owned by the Mexican gov't, that had the rights to make them. They took the 2 door US Spirit hatchback and made their own 4 door variant, and also had a few unique trim variations on some AMC models. ( I have owned a 1979 US AMC Spirit since 1989, so I know a lot about them!)

I have not seen a lot of old cars. Not as many as I expected. I was down here in the mid 90s and there were a lot more. So far I have seen a 70 Chevelle 4 dr, Late 50s Ford and a 66 Impala. Not very many G-Bodys. Definately a lot of small cars that we don't have in the US. Oh well, time to go find some Margaritas before I fly back the cold weather in Michigan. (It was 70 and sunny here today).

The air cooled bug was still made down there tell 01 i think the de mexico shelbys are rare there also was a maverick boss made down there too.
