I had never heard of this stuff. I have lightly reseached alternative fuels but have never heard of it. why have fuels such as biodesiel and hydrogen been so much more popular than cgt?

Combustion Gas Turbine it's extremely sensitive to particulate contamination and hydrocarbon dew point---i did a search and found a presentation on it. i hadn't heard of it beforehand

What is meant by "Combustion Gas"? is it like Wood Gas? I know of the issues with turbine engines in that they do not throttle quickly up or down, but I am curious as to what the fuel is?

oppps im retarded I ment CNG. I am bad with acronyms.

Well, CNG engines are pretty common. Sarasota County, Florida has all of it's fleet run on CNG. That being said, it has it's drawbacks in terms of BTU's and on vehicle storage of a compressed gas. Honda also sells factory CNG Civics for anyone who wants to buy them, but they do cost $25,000 so it's a bit of a premium to pay for a fuel that is not always easy to find. Then there is the FCX Clarity (also Honda) which is a production Hydrogen Fuel Cell car that you can lease now in some parts of California.

I work for a large natural gas company. CNG vehicles have their place, but until refueling comes to be more available, they just will not take over. At one time engineers were working on a small compressor that would hook right up to your house gas meter. You could refill at your own home, and the charges would be right on your next months utility bill. This is fine for short trips, but longer trips away from home still raise an issue where to refill? The size and safety of a cng tank is also a concern. Larger vehicles such as buses and larger trucks have ample room to place the pressure tanks, where family sized vehicles do not. A few years ago I believe it was GM had fleet vehicles set up for running on cng? They had safety issues with the tanks becoming corroded from road salt ect. and had some of these vehicles blow up from the tank leaking natural gas. Many companies pulled the cng fueled vehicles off their fleet becasue of this safety concern. I believe it can work, but at todays technology it would be difficult.

I have seen a taxi from New York running on cng. I dont know if it was ever put into service, it was donated to my old school. The tank was in the trunk, I dont know how safe that would be if you got rear ended.

a guy I work with here has a CNG converted Cavalier, probably late 90's or so. The biggest problem I think is finding a place to get it filled! Not like they're on every corner like gas stations. Supposedly runs him about a buck a gallon, but I don't know about MPG numbers.

The Tampa Machinery Auction sells oodles of CNG cars from Sarasota. I remember looking at some of them back when I was thinking about buying an old cop car for a delivery vehicle. ( I decided against it)
