Hello, one of my piston needs new rings cause the top one is chipped pretty bad and has low compression, the motor is in the car and a shop said I could pop out the piston swap rings and place back in using same bearings, I would like to know if that were true before I take out my piston. Anyhelp would be great thanks

Yes you can but if you are going to tear motor down that far why not just overhaul everything bearings and rings. Besides in order to get the new rings to seat a hone job is required. The next question is why and how did ring get chipped but the piston didnt. Generally piston will be damaged before the rings. I would look a little further into it to make sure all is well.

The motor really isn't to far down only the right head is off and I was just goin to drop the pan and pop it out, honeing I'm goin to do my self, it should take 2 minutes, every thing else is fine on the motor it doesn't need an overhaul, while replacing a carb, a peice of metal dropped into cylinder 2(didn't know) started it up then quickly shut it off, piston has a couple chips nothin major and the top ring has 2 huge dents in it and have a bent valve, when I'm replacing the valve I thought I mine as well replace the rings... but I'm on a budget cause I'm back n school with bills, just want to get it on the road again

In that case go for it. You are going to have one hell of a time pulling pan while in the car. Thought you would be pulling motor to do it. Thats the easiest way in my opinion and at that point i would be doing an overhaul

I assumed the pan would be a pan in the *ss, but I can do it ya? That's all I need to hear, not really in the mood to pull the motor yet lol

It's doable, been there, done that, got a "T" shirt that says $#%^&*@#@!!! . Did an oil pump on a LeMans w/350 V-8. You will find removing motor mount bolts and lifting the motor a bit will make a ton of oil pan clearance. If a rear distributor, pull it so it doesn't hit the firewall. If you can get a single new bearing, use one, but I'm pretty sure they only come as full sets. In that case it better be like new to reuse a used one. It's an SBC? I think bearing sets are on sale at Wall-Mart this week.....
