Hey everyone, I have an 84 Grand Prix with a 350 and a 4bbl. Q-jet. Im having an issue lately with the choke light coming on.Yesterday the light was on all day, today nothing. Before that, everyonce in awhile, the light will come on for awhile then the next time you start it, it'll be off. I guess its just bugging me to see this bright amber light on the dash. Im not noticing any changes in the driving characteristics of the car with light on.If anyone has tackled this problem before, please help. Thanks alot!

It may mean the choke connector on the carb is coming loose or is rusty. My car is a bastardised wiring and if I pull the choke wire off,the light comes on.It is a funny looking grey connector on the electric choke housing that breaks just by you looking at it. Usually the male end on the carb gets rusty and needs to be cleaned with a bit of sandpaper. If the connector breaks or is allready broken a tiny tie-wrap will hold it in place. Do you have gauges? If so the manual suggests checking choke/heater fuse and generator terminal 1 for voltage during fast idle.If the generator fails or is failing the choke heater relay will ground through the brown wire on terminal 1.If the fuse is out,it will ground through the relay back to the genarator lighting the "choke warning" light.

The male and female end of the conector, are in excellent shape and no corrosion. I do have gauges. Since I purchesed the car, it has had two of the gauges that do not function. The original owner swaped out the fact. clock for a fact. tach. But it doesnt work. The other is the oil pressure gauge. It has never worked since I got the car. It is in the max location. Needle all the way to the right. Dont know, possibly a problem with the oil sender?? Maybe Ill get another sender and see if this corrects any of the problems. Any ideas of where to look for a problem on the tach?? Thanks alot!

Manual says if oil gauge goes to "H" the wire to sender is disconnected. If it is connected, sender is probably stuck. A dead tach may be no power, no ground, no tach signal , or a bad tach. See if there is a wire hooked up to the "tach" terminal on the distributor cap, right next to the big "pink" wire at the "batt" terminal. You can test all of the gauges by removing the pods from the dash and hot wiring them. I use alligator clips and long leads to hook up batt + and - as well as sending unit input. Look at the back of the pods and check the printed circuit for breaks or fried lines. My 83' Pontiac manual shows the wiring for gauge and idiot light dash circuit to be the same, so the prior owner did not have to change anything, just R/R.
