CHOKE THERMOSTAT REPLACEMENT?

Hi all,

I have a 85' 442 with the quadrajet carb.
My car not idling hi upon a cold start so after a few tests I came to
The conclusion that the "choke thermostat" was no good
No I bought a new one but now don't know how many turns I has to give
It before tightening the 3 screws.


Please help.

the spring sits in a slot on the choke plate shaft. install the spring and cover so that the spring will fit into the slot and then install the screws loose. the choke plate should be loose and not want to shut. turn the cover so it will tighten the spring enough so that when you push the accelerator pedal, the choke plate will shut completely. now crank the engine and let it warm up. if the choke plate stays shut even after the car has run for a few minutes, its too tight and you will have to back it off a few ticks. the spring is pretty sensitive, so you dont have to move the cover very far. if the choke is heated by a heat stove from the manifold, it should close some when the engine cools and you start it again, but should release with the pull off and a warm engine. it may take a few adjustments to get it right. Outside air temp will play a big role in the spring tension, so keep that in mind.
 
The stock choke housing on an 85 carb has a 'nub' on it and the plastic choke cover has a notch, so it can only go on one way ( kinda like the cap on an HEI distributor ). You can't rotate it to make any adjustments unless you grind the nub on the housing off. So basically, just put it on the only way it can go on.
 
what i dont understand is how many turns do i have to give it?
i placed it in, put the screws in and gave it a turn untill i saw the choke close.
it doesnt seem to drop from idle when the car is warm.
im new to this carb stuff, sorry
i would like a step by step if possible, it will be greatlly ap.

In the past, I have always set the choke to where it just shuts all the way when cold. So with your choke, that should basically be 0 turns. If you wrap it around a full turn before installing, it will be way too tight.

X2...the linkage may be binding or the pull of may not be working properly. As stated above, theres really no "turns", rather adjusting clockwise or counter clockwise to tighten or loosen the spring slightly. Most of the time, the best way to set the choke is when the engine is cold and u turn it so the choke just shuts completely, but after its hot, it should remain open and not close much when restarting the engine. Just remember, these chokes are manually activated by the throttle and they will only open by the combination of heat and a vacuum pull off.
