I, the all knowing forum geek, will show you the path to enlightenment and answer all of your existential quandaries. Then again...maybe I'll just answer the technical question at hand.

It's really quite simple. There are 2 speed nuts on the door, one at the front, one at the rear. These hold the attaching studs for the trim piece and you have to remove them. Next up, you simply push the trim piece upwards slightly from the bottom and tip the top outwards after moving the trim piece upwards around 3/16 of an inch. Just don't force it up too much as it will break the springy part of the nylon attaching clip.

Blasphemy! The Chrome makes these cars in my opinion. Otherwise they are about as visually exciting as a block of cheese.

I am not keeping all of the chrome on mine, I did eliminate the fugly ding strips and all emblems except for the Oldsmobile script on the front bumper ( NOS GM still in original packaging!), but the car really needs these pieces to make it visually interesting. I think it was Car Craft that said these cars "look like they were extruded", and I tend to agree. To each their own I guess, just don't ruin these trim pieces and their clips. If you put the setup on E-Bay you will be surprised what someone will pay for a complete straight set of the stainless moldings. They are getting hard to come by in serviceable condition and it is a shame to ruin any piece of an old car someone may have use for on theirs.

Exactly how I feel. Oh, and if your taking it off permanantly, there are studs under it that need to be removed and hol;es to be filled. So that means paint time.

Yeah, there are 6 holes per fender and 2 holes per door per side to fill if you eliminate them.
