If i put my foot the floor (which happens often) my 305 makes a clattering/ticking sound. My dad thinks its the header gaskets leaking since we adjusted the rockers twice. We turned the nut in until they stopped ticking and went half a turn past that point. Would an exhaust leak right on the header gasket make a clattering noise? I almost think its in the valve train but none of the push rods are bent. And the rockers are adjusted.

Sure its just not pinging hard? did you look at the timing? maybe just a tank of bad gas? I'd look for the simple first before tearing the thing down.

Turn the car on and have some one rev it while u look for leaks around your headers. Check your flanges also, but it would make like a hissing tick. Could be something just hitting something else.

What would you say is a good place to start for a beefed up 305 timing? And no, my dad works for castle and every tank of gas i get i snag a bottle of their octane booster off his van and throw it in there. Doesnt change a thing.

If you think you have an exhaust leak you can pull a vacuum line off (doesn't matter which one as long as it goes to the intake somewhere) and stick the line into a bottle of trans fluid, after a few min it should start smoking from wherever the exhaust leak is, if no leak then it should just go out the exhaust pipe. This won't hurt anything either, your engine will or may start to run a little rough as it's trying to burn the trans fluid but you'll find the exhaust leak if it has one.

Or block the tail pipe with a rag round your hand and have someone look for leaks in the exhaust system.

Ended up being header collector gaskets. Apparently they dont work too well when the whole gasket is blown out. Haha
