hi all I have spent the last couple days stipping the cutlass down to start body work and was wonder what is the best way to remove the aluminum trim around the windshields without destroying the trim and maybe saving some clips although the clips are probably brittle by now

It's a breeze if you have a trim removal tool.
It's pretty much a flat hook that you slide along under the trim, and when you feel the clips, you carefully pry them loose, which releases the trim.

yeah the clips are readily availabe too, so don't feel bad if you break any, like you said, they are brittle 25 year old or older plastic....

some are metal, the correct ones are plastic, not like it matters, but i've had my windshield replaced and the window shop replaced the broken ones with metal clips, works the same

A few are metal, but the majority are plastic. The very top and bottom ones on the side I think are metal, but the ones between those are plastic. I used plastic on all of them but wish I had used metal where it was supposed to go as the trim does not sit perfectly flush as I would like it to. Anyhow, consider the plastic ones disposable items that will need to be replaced. I got a big box of them on E-Bay for around $15 when it came time to do mine. It's much cheaper that way versus buying them at the parts store in those damn 3 packs.
