steubenville, oh
first, i need to identify which rearend i have. there is no tag on the rearend that i can find, so that's already out the door. it has been painted at some point and either the sticker was covered or removed.

i assume there is a stamped part number on the housing somewhere, but the paint on the outside is so thick i can't see one. is it stamped anywhere else? maybe inside the diff housing?

i need a part number so i can get parts to fix whatever is wrong. it is a 10 bolt rear, and that's all i can tell you.

my rear has been making funny noises since i got the car, and i'm trying to rectify that.

i took it apart one night, but couldn't get the pinion shaft out. no, the bolt did not break off. i could use an extension and hammer and pound the shaft out a few inches, but at some point you run out of space.

i can't figure out why this should be. i know that shaft should slide right out. it was also marred on the ends.

anyone think of a reason why the shaft wouldn't slide right out?

also, about the noises it's making, i posted about it here once. the wheels move in and out a bit when i jack up the rear and make a clunking noise when i do. i was told in my last thread that it's normal for the wheels to move in and out and that it could be that the rear is pron to making noise.

a mechanic friend of mine says my wheels are moving too much, and the noise is far from normal. i would say the axles move out from the pinion shaft 1/16"-1/8".

that's all i have for now, help is appreciated

Some pics would help, specifically of the center section of the rear end at the back, showing the diff cover flange and bottom of the housing. The gear ratio is stamped on the ring gear as a total number of ring gear and pinion gear teeth. Divide ring gear by pinion with a calculator to get the ratio. you can also measure the ring gear diameter since you have it apart, if it's stock, to see which 10 bolt you have: 7.5, 7.625, or 8.5.

The rear is no lnger apart. I had to put it back together being that it is my daily driver. I'll try to get back with pics soon

Thanks for the info

Also, the rear is not stock. Previous owner swapped it in. He bight it from smlomeone he knows and does not know what car it cam from

7.5 or 7.625 10 bolt. It's the rear axle 99.5% of G bodies came with. The other 0.5% came with the awesomeness that is the 8.5 in 10 bolt.
