Wow I cant believe how rusted that trunk lid is. I have yet to see one up here in Ohio rusted that bad.
sorry man, i gotta disagree on that one..LOL. i was born and raised in ohio, i just moved down here to florida back in 2001 and i have seen tons of cars with that type of damage. heck, i have owned quite a few like that. when i was younger id buy em cheap, run em hard and send them to the crusher when i was done. i remember one i wish i had kept though, although it was ate up so bad im not sure it would have been worth the work. if i remember right it was a 72 lemans. i found it while cruising the alleys in marion ohio ( little factory town in north central ohio that went under when all the factorys pretty much went under or went overseas ) , got the guy to sell it to me for a couple hundred bucks. it had a pontiac 350 in it and although it was beat and rusted to hell, most of the interior was gone, it ran and handled like a race car. after checking the numbers on it it turned out it had some option where you could order a lemans with the GTO suspension and performance package. im assuming for insurance purposes, so if you wanted a goat but wanted the lemans rates you could have it. i also had a 71 i pulled out of some farmers field, i was going to make one decent one out of the 2, i dont even remember what happened to them to be honest. i probably went through 40 cars and trucks by the time i was 23. but anyways, back to the subject, you are correct about the sun beating the plastic parts to death. my 80 cutty looks solid and clean, and for the most part it is, but all my bumper fillers are huffed. they look good, but theyre so brittle they shatter with the slightest pressure. and all my weatherstripping is gone. the sun down here does kill that sh*t big time. but yeah, im with you. offer the guy $5 or 6 hundy and at worst got good parts car. id be willing to bet the undercarriage is not rusted though, since like i said they dont salt the roads down here, and i doubt the roof is rusted either. most of the stuff i see down here has a think layer of surface rust on the roofs and sometimes trunk and hoods, where they sun eats the paint up and allows it to start a thin layer of surface rust that actually helps protect it from worse damage. and doors seem to be the worst down here, again, like you said due to the sun killing the seals. probably the reason for the damage at the bottom lip of the trunk lid to, the weather stripping is ate up and water is running down and setting inside that lip. i always make sure any drain holes in the bottoms of my doors are unclogged and if there are none i add some. like i said, if this was 3 or 4 months down the road id have already called about it and checked it out at least. my 17 yr old son is moving down here and is going to be wanting a g-project soon. i wouldnt mind finding him a malibu, but GD, the prices on those are so out of line down here its sick. anyways, thats why we need a florida site up and running, so local deals like this can be posted where someone who might actually be looking for something like this will see it.
