Decode the Code?

Anyone know what this came out of? 6TJ G 165

Supposedly a 8.5 from a GN but doesn't match the codes in the sticky at the top of this section. What do you think?

I'm thinking it's GTJ instead of 6TJ
"3.42 8.5" GTE, GTP, GTJ "

Unless I'm missing something (or brain damaged) it should be a 8.5, 3.42 from '84 or '85

If it was GTJ, would that be a limited slip? I couldn't tell from that chart.

I guess it wasn't very helpful in that aspect huh? If you have it at home I'd just pop the cover and take a look.

That's the problem, I'm looking to buy it and it's not local. Trying to determine if it is what is advertised. I haven't been able to get him to send me pictures and the guy says he's not sure if it's open or posi. He also said that he's not sure of the year either. He did say that it's out of a GN, but who wnows? The price that he's asking isn't too bad if it really is from a g body. I'd like to be sure before I commit though. I'm starting to get a little uneasy about it...

Sounds like he isn't too interested in selling it if he doesn't want to go through the "little bit of effort" to help you out. Most deals that are too good to be true usually are. He may not even know what he's talking about....plenty of them out there too.

I'm driving almost 5 hours to buy an engine and the guy sent me a video tape of it running because he couldn't send one in an email. Now that's a serious seller!

That's why I'm doing whatever I can here. I'm starting to wonder a bit about the whole deal. The guy is selling a hood from a '86 GN too, with a picture, so at least he has some other Buick parts, whatever that's worth...
