Anyone using one of these behind an engine producing 500-600HP and around 600ft/lbs?

When I bought my Ford 9" for my '87, I had them install the Detroit True Trac with 4.30 gears in a Strange Aluminum center section.

I just received a recent Car Craft where they discuss a few of the different lockers and limited slips and in that article, they mention the True Trac is only good for horespower levels between 300HP and 350HP??? It was my understanding these diffs could handle a heck of a lot more than that.

My brother has an '02 Mustang GT with 400rwhp and his buddy has an '01 GT with a little more than that. Both have True Trac's and run in the low 12's to high 11's on drag radials and don't seem to have problems.

Was just curious if anyone else has used the True Trac and had any problems?

Thanks,

don't have one yet, but a bunch of guys over at pro-touring have them behind 500+hp mills and no problems. however it's not a posi i'd use for the drag strip, helical gears are meant for curves, not launches. they usually require a bit of wheel spin before engaging. you'd be better off with a regular clutch style for multi-purpose and a locker for dedicated track with driving to/from the race.

Yeah, my car is a pro-touring/road race setup so that's why I went with the True Trac over a locker. I just thought it was odd they published such a low HP rating on them.

Thanks,

I was wondering the same..... Is the Zexel Torsen the same as the True-Trac? Reason i am asking is because i have one out of a 02 Camaro SS i also have a Auburn posi out of a 87 Regal. So after reading the article it says the Auburn is stronger?...

don't know much about the zexel, but it appears to be the same type as the tru-trac, so i'd expect the same inherent weaknesses. so the auburn would be better for drag racing. however the auburn cone style is not the favorite for dragging either. most people seem to prefer a clutch style or a locker. i think the auburn slips badly under power.

The Tru Trac. A member of our Chevelle Club was the sales rep for Eaton and their posi units. We had the same question last Spring when I rebuild my son's 1978 wagon. He said Tru Trac is the best. He never liked the Auburn unit and says they didn't wear as well. His 1971 Chevelle is a SEMA car and in Hot Rod and Car Craft with a 500+hp engine with a Moser rear end and it has the Tru Trac.

The Zexel units are pretty nice especially since they came factory on the LS1 F-bodies. I know of a sub 12 second Camaro and a 10 second LSx swapped S10 with the stock 7-5/8 rear end and all he had done was swap to a Torsen and I beleive c-clip eliminators and it made something like 15-20 passes no problem before he upgraded his rear end to match the larger turbos.

I read the same and like you and the others, scratching my head :?

I'm running one in my Ford 9" and haven't had in problems but I'm also not running 500+ to the wheels. I guess it's really down to preference and how you're going to use the vehicle. Kind of like the axles.

As far as Car Craft, it seems for the past 2 or so issues they're on crack or something - most of the build articles are hella-glossed over and incomplete, with some having incorrect info even in the What's Your Problem section. Makes me think the producers of Spike TV's PowerBlock shows (Horsepower especially) are writing for the magazine.
