sorry for the noob ? but ive worked on fords all my life this is my first chevy. how do i tell if i have a long or short water pump. is it the distance between the timing cover? or the overall length of the pump? and can someone give me a measurement so i can measure it and figure out which one i have. Thanks in advance

The long water pump is most common. If i remember correctly the long one is somewhere around 7" overall from block to hub and have about an 1-1/2" between timing cover. The short is about 5-1/2" overall and about an inch between cover. Both will work, but each require their according pulley setups. (short style pump will not work with long style pulleys)

k thanks. i got to compare them side by side. the long pump u can get ur index finger between the pump and timing cover. on the short pump my uncle has on his chevy pickup i couldnt even fit my finger between it.

Yup, short pumps are pretty much touching the timing cover. They were also used until 79 on monza's.
