Today I was at a wrecking yard and noticed a 78 Monte Carlo that still had the long engine compartment bars and jounce bars. Decided to get these. When I was pulling the jounce bars off I noticed an additional bar mounting from the front of the jounce mounting hole to the bumper shock mounting hole. I know that on 80 and 83 malibu's they don't have this additional bar if equipped with the jounce bars. I'm thinking that this was only found on 78 Monte Carlos just like the long engine compartment bars.
I've seen this happen before on other cars. Things end up getting dropped on next year models after its first year. Bean counter at work.
