Its time for my differential to be serviced I bought a new chrome cover and fel-pro gasket do I need any sealer or can I just run the gasket bolted down to correct torque spec?

Also I believe the gear oil is 80W-90 each bottle is 1 quart how many do I need? I was guessing 3.

Thanks in advance guys.

I just use a good sealer with no gasket, like permatex copper silicone. You won't need more then 2 quarts of gear oil.

Might be a good idea to use some sandpaper to scuff the chrome on the sealing flange. It helps the RTV seal better.

well it depends on the gasket,i used rubber gasket and didnt have to use any silicone. yes i would agree use sand paper to scuff things up. 1 1/2 to 2 quarts

Thanks guys I think I am going with gasket only I hate messing with gooey rtv. Thanks on the 2 quarts don't want to overspend

I will try the sandpaper method, does it matter what grit? I think I will also wipe the flange down with alcohol.

Not really. 80-120# is probably fine. Like I said, it's more to help with RTV sealing. It gives it something to grip to. Chrome is so smooth that sealing fluids can be difficult. The tip/trick holds true with things like chrome thermostat housings and valve covers also.
