ive got an 82 cutty with a 67 400ci pontiac block,3" headers and a th400 box, got the car with no exhausts so need to make one or have one made , as i live in the u.k not many people will make a system for me , so far i have modded the transmission crossmember to allow me to run dual exhausts, so far it just has 2 cherry bombs on it and its WAY to loud!!
the question is do i need to run them through an X or H pipe or can i keep them seperate and keep it cheap?

You might want to lose those Cherry Bombs and go with a good turbo style muffler. They can be acquired in different sound levels depending on how loud you want to go. Dynomax, Flowtech, Borla, etc.
A good full system that goes over the rear axle and empties out behind the rear tires, or rear bumper will help tone down the exhaust note somewhat. An "H" pipe will help balance the exhaust pulses and can in effect help mellow the sound.
I think you can keep it simple (and quieter) by going with a full dual exhaust system.

i see so the balancer pipe is just to blend the sound ?
right now it sounds like two shotguns going off ! will a couple of good mufflers and an X or H pipe shut it up a bit?

You don't necessarily need an H or X pipe. A couple of good mufflers and a full exhaust system with 2.5" pipe should make it sound alot better. When I mean alot better, I mean quieter and not as raucous.

you don't NEED a crossover. however either style will boost power, and the x-pipe is shown to "mellow" out the sound (and produce slightly better power than the H) check out pypes performance for sounds and ideas.

Run an "H" pipe........... I heard they will gove you a 20 hp increase over not running one, I will be adding one of them in the spring and replacing my Summit Turbos with Flowmaster super 44's...8)

when i had the 305 in my car my dad built a the same motor for a guy with a monte ss and he didnt have an H pipe and his car was quite a bit louder. we were both running same muffler with the exhaust run the same way justy no cross over. mine sounded cleaner and it was quieter
