I've got kick panel mounted speakers in my El Camino and they sound better than ones in the door due to the angle- mid and high range sounds are directional whereas the low frequency sub range can be aimed anywhere. Sure, feet hit 'em but the door mounted ones, even if they barely stick out, get kicked EVERY TIME. You adjust to the kick panel version and the e-brake just needs pulled/ bent outwards a tad and still works perfectly. You can't really protect the door mounted ones from scuffs very easily but a folded up blanket or shirt will save your kick panel speakers from inattentive passengers. Just put it there for the people who don't listen when you say "Be careful" until they learn.
There's also a myriad of aftermarket grilles and covers to choose from, and you can simply pop some of them on and off to switch or replace things.
