What's the easiest way to check an EGR valve to ensure it is functioning properly? It's on an 1988 Olds 307 engine.

Use a Mityvac to ensure it is not leaking vacuum. Then manually depress the valve to feel for smooth movement. If it needs replacing, get a AC Delco valve.

Thanks. I disconnected the vacuum hose that links the EGR valve to what I believe is the EGR control solenoid - it's relatively near the distributor cap. I left the hose on the EGR valve intact and attached the other end of the hose to the Mityvac gun. I pumped it multiple times, but the gauge needle wouldn't move. Would this mean that the EGR valve is stuck or no longer functioning? Should I do the vacuum test with the car on? The engine starts, and runs, but when revving, it bogs and wants to turn off. I had this issue two years ago, and the issue (according to the dealer) was the EGR valve. I had them replace it, and now it seems to be doing the same thing again. I don't really drive the car much, and am puzzled as to why the EGR valve has once again failed.

If they didn't use an AC Delco part then Im not surprised that it failed.
You get what you pay for...
Buy a Delphi one on Rockauto and swap it out yourself and be done....
